This course is designed to provide the knowledge needed to successfully monitor the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia in a private dental practice. Some of the topics to be presented include a review and update on basic physiology, information on patient evaluation for the use of nitrous oxide, a discussion of the role of nitrous oxide in the dental practice, a review of the new equipment and techniques, and knowledge of the indications and contraindications for using nitrous oxide.

This course includes a laboratory session in which the hygienist will have the opportunity to operate both primary types of nitrous oxide/oxygen flowmeters in a small group setting under the supervision of a dentist.
This course will address:
· The anatomy an physiology of respiration and circulation.
· The physiological and psychological aspects of pain and anxiety.
· The pharmacological and physiological aspects of nitrous oxide-oxygen administration.
· The indication and contraindications of inhalation therapy.
· Types and variations of nitrous oxide-oxygen administration equipment.
· Proper administration, maintenance, and recovery of the patient
· The potential for nitrous oxide abuse.
