The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Department of Dental Hygiene in coordination with

The University of Tennessee at Martin’s Office of Extended Campus and Continuing Education (ECCE) and will offer a certification course in administration of local anesthesia for the dental hygienist. The course fulfills the Tennessee State Dental Practice Act requirement regarding certification for the administration oflocal anesthesia for the registered dental hygienist. The goal of this online course is to prepare the practicing dental hygienist to assist the dentist in alleviating and managing a patient’s dental pain and anxiety. The dental hygienist will be provided background knowledge in how nerve impulses are propagated and blocked and the mechanics of local anesthetic administration. Online course requirements prior to class attendance must be completed. 

The cost of the course will be $1,000. Participants must be licensed dental hygienists with a minimum of two years of continuous full-time practice employment with in the past three years. A two-day face-to-face laboratory component will be included to prepare the students for certification in the administration of local anesthesia.  Candidate must provide:  Proof of Liability insurance, current State License, and current CPR documentation.

The course will be taught by Dr. Bobby Collins,and dental hygiene faculty members who are certified in the administration of local anesthesia. Upon successful completion of this course, the director will submit a letter to the Tennessee Board of Dentistry (TBOD).  After a $50 fee and certification application are submitted, the TBOD will issue a 90-day temporary permit to the dental hygienist, who must then complete 44 successful injections as prescribed by the TBOD.

We are pleased to announce the kickoff of a brand new “Periodontal Hygiene Study Club”. We will meet four times a year with fun, food and informative speakers with 2 hours of CE credit.  Best of all it is free. 

Our initial meeting will be held at Holiday Inn Select Memphis East, 5795 Poplar Avenue, on Monday May 18^th at 6:15 p.m.   As our first speaker we are excited to introduce Dr. Gregory E. Oxford, a Periodontist, from St. Augustine, FL.  He will discuss Periodontal Maintenance of DentalImplants. Dr. Oxford is a board certified dental surgeon with clinical and research backgrounds.  He has earned national and international recognition as a lecturer and expert in the field of Periodontology. He attended Emory University School of Dentistry in Atlanta and completed his surgical residency in Maryland with an internship at the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Oxford received his PhD. from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Molecular Biology.
